Solvognen (the sun cart)
Dating from ca. 1350 BC, it is in my opinion the greatest work of art to come out of Denmark.

Based on similarieties in grave finds, Danish archeologist Søren Nanke-Krogh claims that the Danes originate from tribes from Afghanistan who came here on horseback during the early Bronze age.

One of the many unlucky Panthers involved in the Battle of Kursk, note the towing device mounted at the front.
The Panther was not yet ready for action by the time of the Kursk offensive, but Hitler demanded the new tank was put in service and many broke down on the steppes due to engine fires or gearbox failure.

On the Eastern front, note the patchy winter camouflage on the truck as compared to the more carefully applied finish on the Pz IV, combat vehicles got more attention. Winter camouflaging was not done with paint but with whitewash which could be scrubbed off again when the snow disappeared in spring or during thaws.

I've always been fascinated by the shopping mall in my old hometown, Jyllinge.
It included the mural seen in the photo which represents the town's only art in a public space.

Back in my early teens I sometimes went to the local mall in the evening. I dont know what I was looking for because I never met anyone.
There was a grill there but I was afraid of getting anywhere near it because the kids who hung out there were moped riding proto-bikers and they would usually shout abuse at me or bark some kind of threat. Just the usual domineering territorial fascism that seems to make up the main mental framework of this wonderfull breed of people.

Most of them went on to become career-bikers with The Bandidos™, run the local hardwareshop, earn a fortune as carpenters or bricklayers, or take over an auto repair shop from uncle or daddy.

In other words,

stuck.

And they knew it.

Panzer Panther, Ausf G
A command version of the Panther, distinguisable by the star shaped antenna on the rear deck and the extra antenna on the turret roof.
The full integration of radio communications between regiment and divisional commanders and the individual tanks, were one of the reasons for the early successes of the Panzerwaffe. Officers in the British armoured forces had to receive orders for attack in writing while their German colleagues simply got them over the radio, and in the early part of the war with The Soviet Union the Russian tankers fighting in the T-34 had to rely on the use of signal flags because not enough radios were around .

Panzer Turretnumbers
The German Panzers had a unique system for numbering. Each vehicle received a three-digit number painted on both the left and right sides of the turret. The digits represented the vehicles position within the organisation of a panzer regiment: Company, platoon, and vehicle number. The Panzer IV in the photo would be the fourth vehicle of the fourth platoon in the seventh company.

Panzer Pzkpfw IV, Ausf H, in colour.
The "panzer IV" was often referred to as "the workhorse of the panzerwaffe", since it was the German tank produced in most numbers (around 9,000) and it also formed the basis for a wide number of SP guns, panzerjäger, Flakpanzers, etc. It was also the only panzer to remain in production througout the WWII, when other designs were faded out due to the continuing developments in armaments and armour. An amusing fact was that the Panzer IV started the war classified as a heavy tank intended to support the main battle tanks like the Panzer II and III's but ended up classified as a medium tank making up the main body of the panzerwaffe.

B.urn I.n H.ell, Augusto Pinochet, 1915-2006
Growing up, the famous photo of the sunglasses-wearing Pinochet as head of the Chilean junta became the image of evil in my mind.
Those were different times, now that he's dead we're ready for the stories of how he really didn't want the power, how he actually tried to stop the real bastards for creating an even worse dictatorship, etc, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah.

Another handyman for Imperialism, think fondly of him when you buy a Chilean product, he probably had shares in the company that produced it and today his grandchildren can go to expensive schools in America and learn how to run the world.

Sieg Heil.

Panzer Flak 36/37, 88 mm
The famous "88" deserves some space here. Originally an anti-aircraft gun, it was used in an emergency against the heavily armoured French tanks during the Battle of France in 1940, and a legend was born. Since the gun was still usefull for shooting down airplanes many of the crews operating them belonged to the Luftwaffe and not the Army, like the group seen in the photo. Note the high number of "kill rings" on the barrel, and the fact that the gun is pointed at ground targets and not up in the air. The batteries of "acht-acht's" were responsible for a fair share of tank kills on both the Eastern and western fronts during WWII.

Art supplies at the supermarket - a democratization or commodification of Art?

"The public will keep on buying more and more art, and husbands will start bringing home little paintings to their wives on their way from work, and we’re all going to drown in a sea of mediocrity..."

Anchee Min, is a Chinese writer who lived in China during the cultural revolution (which she was a fervent supporter of) After the death of Mao she fell from grace and lived a "quiet life" for many years until she migrated to the US and wrote the bestseller Red Azalea

I'm buying this book from Amazon, because just like Anchee Min I spent most of my childhood and youth in love with The Revolution™.
The idea that the working classes (which my parents and grand-parents came from) should rise up and free themselves from oppression and capitalist slavery and then create a new world based on the Truth: Communism - seemed very appealing to me.
In the 1970's and 80's I was definitely not alone having views like that, but now that the Eastern bloc has collapsed and the former People's Democratic Monarchy of Denmark has converted from welfare socialism to welfare liberalism, I of course have to keep my mouth shut, getting gang-banged by converters willing to show the new flag is never much fun.
And then; Even if you filter out the worst "we won the cold war" propaganda, it's obvious that Communism didn't create a new and better world, but just re-cycled ancient old recipes for oppressive societies.

So what do I do in the brave new world, then, start my own web business?...

Listening to music is an off- and on experience for me, and for a long time it's been more off than on, but I'll always have time for the early works of Brian Eno, like the 2999 AD popism of Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy, and while you listen to it you can read about the Chinese revolutionary opera which originally inspired Eno to make the record. Eno later remarked that:"...he had no interest in seeing the opera, but its title (which he felt sounded at once medieval and modern, romantic and practical) fascinated him...."

medieval and modern, romantic and practical...

Sounds like the spirit of our present times, right there.

If you can explain what makes a painting a work of Art or not (except your own individual tastes and preferences) - you are a genius and can marry my sister, sleep with my wife and drive my Ferrari any day of the week.

The above creation is usually labeled as "kitsch" and NOT considered to be a work of Art..

but, why?

Maybe it lies in the creator's intentions for making it?
