After I finished high school (1985) I worked at a hospital. In the evening I would go out "jogging", as exercising by going for a run was referred to back then. Contracy to the fashion trends of the era I didn't wear a pink headband and matching wristbands or lime green spandex leotards, but I did carry a Walkman.
I usually listened to Suicide because of the monotonous but rhythmic qualities of their music, good for setting the pace when running. I usually ran for about fifteen minutes.
One evening something came over me; I felt a strange surge of energy and instead of doing my normal routine I ran all the way into town and back again (I still lived with my parents on the outskirts of town) I felt no exhaustion during the trip where I covered at least twice the distance I normally would, I was flowing on willpower and enthusiasm! and the music of Suicide pumping in my ears, driving , moving , pushing.

The funny thing was; I only did that once, afterwards I would just do my normal round.

(and the point is, Lennard?)

Panzer Panzerjäger 38(t) Hetzer
A group of Czech resistance fighters posing in front of a Hetzer, May 1945.
Hetzers were produced under German control by the Skoda company, and by May 1945 the Skoda plants were some of the few factories not occupied by Allied forces, which meant that factory fresh Hetzers could still be picked up and put to use.

Note the marking of the 1'st SS Panzer Division "Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler" on the far right. This division was formed from Hitler's own bodyguard and commanded by his WWI friend Joseph "sepp" Dietrich. "Dietrich" means key in German which explains the inclusion of a key in the divisional symbol.

Destroyed during the battle of Kowel, spring 1944. The land around Kowel was mostly marshes making the railway the only ground suitable for 45 ton panzers. Unfortunately the high ground also made them easy targets for Russian AT guns.

Watercolour by Hitler, made in France during his time as a WWI soldier

Running low on ideas as usual, so why not some Third Reich Trivia?

- Hugo Boss designed the infamous black uniforms of the SS.

- The German Nazi party recruited its members mainly from the middle classes. If you select them by their employment, the largest group represented were: Doctors.

Panzer Panther, Ausf G
A knocked out Panther inspected by the British, note the distinctive "flammvernichtern" - flame dampers, fitted to the end of the exhaust pipes. In the latter part of the war the panzers fought mainly from concealed positions to avoid allied air superiority and fire flashes emerging from the exhaust pipes would give away their hide out to the enemy, hence the introduction of the flame dampers.

Beautiful revolving sphincter, oops brown painting (2003)

Highlights of British painting: Damien Hirst

(Some will argue if Damien Hirst can be called a painter since he mainly acquired his fame for his conceptual work, like the shark in formaldehyde, etc - but doing paintings makes you a painter, right?..)

One of the things I admire about the modern art scene is the way otherwise conservative societies have taken to the absurd creations artists make in grubby messy places called studios while they're pissed or zonked out of their minds on drugs, or sacred tea from the Andes, or bark dissolved in absinthe, or urine. Not only are these objects being accepted as works of art, they are also purchased at outrageous sums from self-made entrepreneurs called art dealers, and then put on display in huge public buildings designed by leading architects and costing millions...where else can you pull off a stunt like that?

In my opinion the greatest work of modern art is the whole idea of modern art itself.

But then, I'm just a cranky old failure with a daytime job... (and nighttime too!)

Some members of the "Wiking" SS division chilling out. The "Wiking" division was one of the few SS divisions that didn't have an atrocity record for killing POW's or civilians. Ironically the infamous Auschwitz doctor Josef Mengele served with the division 1941-42 as a surgeon and even won the Iron Cross for rescuing two troopers out of a burning tank.

Panzer Panther turrets in an abandoned factory in Germany 1945. Worn out panzers that didn't get destroyed in the fighting were sent to factories or workshops for overhaul. The average life of a Panzer at the front lines was three months and often worn out specimens beyond repair were simply blown up to save on resources.

Note the soldiers on horseback in the foreground, the civillian cars in the background (for the higher ranking officers) and the swastika painted on the hood of a halftrack. This was done to prevent mistake attacks from the Luftwaffe who roamed superior in the skies over Russia in the early part of the campaign.
