Danes are flocking to the cinemas to watch Flammen & Citronen (the flame and the lemon) a WWII drama telling the story of the Danish resistance's two biggest heroes who were nicknamed the flame and the lemon.

In my view this film (the most expensive Danish production ever made) never rises above the quality of a "made-for-TV" movie. The leading actors perform adequately and the props and scenery are up to international standard, but my main problem with the film is that it misses an opportunity to deal in dept with the complex questions related to Denmark during WWII and instead we get a fairly plain action movie with a bit of saucy romance thrown in and all of it designed to appeal to a contemporary audience.

When I left the theater I thought that the only thing missing were German soldiers shouting "Achtung" before they died, but we did get the shaven headed Nazi officer in a leather coat...

Get ready for this year's Danish Cinema Awards - Flammen & Citronen is bound to catch a bundle of them.
