Wally's World: The Brilliant Life and Tragic Death of Wally Wood, the World's 2nd Best Comic Book Artist
a biography of cartoonist Wallace "Wally" Wood (1927-81)
A bio which could have benefited from some tighter editing and a better layout but it wil tell you the fascinating tale of a true comic book genius who worked in almost every conceivable genre - Humour (he was a founding member of MAD magazine) horror (with the classic EC comic books) war, romance, wild west, space & science fiction, superheroes (he redesigned Marvel's Daredevil character and brought it to new life in the 1960's) and last but not least his work within the fantasy genre where he created his partially unfinished masterpiece The Wizard King.
Wood was a highly prolific and almost insanely productive artist, often spending up to twenty hours at his drawing table and taking only two vacations over a thirty-year long career (one of which was his honey moon...)
Unfortunately he was also a troubled soul who had a lifelong battle with alcohol which ultimately led to a stroke, leaving him blind on one eye. This was followed by kidney and liver failure, the break-up of his third marriage and a growing disillusion with the comic book industry, prompting him to commit suicide in 1981.
If he was the world's second best cartoonist as the book's title suggests (it fails to explain who's better...) or the numero uno guy is for the readers to decide but you can check some of his fantastic work at the Wally Wood Gallery from psychosaurus.com
